About Clear UV Paint

Starglow Clear UV Paint is a water-borne polyurethane suspension containing a โ€˜smartโ€™ UV pigment which reacts to longwave UV light at 365nm by fluorescing brightly in one of several colours. When applied over white or light colour surfaces, the paint should be translucent or opaque depending on the UV colour together with the number and thickness of coats applied. Do not apply over Black (or dark coloured surfaces) as this will severely reduce the fluorescence of the paint and make it more visible / apparent under normal light.

Please note:ย  These paints are often called โ€˜Invisibleโ€™ UV paints. This refers to the โ€˜hiddenโ€™ colour they produce when exposed to UV Blacklight and it doesย notย mean the paint itself is invisible!

Starglow paints may be used on a wide range of surfaces providing they are pre-coated with a water based base coat or white primer where appropriate (do not apply over solvent / oil based primers or base-coats as these may reject the paint) and clean and free from dirt, oil, grease and loose particles etc.

For best results, apply to a smooth white (primed) surface using a spray-gun / air-brush, foam brush or fine bristle brush.

The fluorescent (glow) effect of this coating is entirely dependent on the UV light source used. The stronger the UV the brighter the resulting fluorescence. The higher the quality of UV (i.e. its frequency and purity) the richer the resulting fluorescent colour. However, if the paint is illuminated using an inferior UV LED light source emitting a low-quality UV output, then the paintโ€™s colour may be adversly affected, resulting in a more bleached or washed-out appearance.ย  Therefore, only use NON-LED blacklights at 365nm frequency.

Starglow Clear UV Paints may be inter-mixed to produce other colours and tones.

The more coats you apply the stronger the fluorescent โ€˜neonโ€™ effect will be under UV Blacklight (365nm). However, the more visible the coating it will become under normal light (especially if applied to a darker surface instead of white).

Starglow Clear UV Paints may be thinned with a little (up to 10% MAX). If the coating is likely to suffer from regular contact, abrasion, wear and tear or be used outdoors and exposed to the elements, then apply 2-3 coats of Starglow protective top-coat.

The performance and life expectancy of this paint will be dramatically reduced if using outdoors where there is prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. Therefore to maximise its lifespan under extended outdoor use, apply only to North facing surfaces.

Please Note:ย  STARGLOW Paints areย NOTย suitable for use onย HOTย surfaces or any high temperature applications.

Whist these paints are not specific made for use on fabrics they should be suitable for use stronger fabrics such as cotton, however it would be necessary for you to test the paint on sample of the fabric first.ย  Do not use Clear UV paints on WHITE fabrics!ย  They will probably be UV sensitive and will clash with the paint as both fluoresce together!ย  Instead choose a UV safe off-white colour such as Ivory or cream.

We strongly recommend you order a sample jar, to test if the paint is suitable for use with your applicationย beforeย ordering a larger size, as our paints are made-to-order and non refundable and non-returnable.

About UV Blacklight

There is so much mis-information online about UV light (Blacklight) we’ll clear up a few main points here…

Is brighter really better?

No.ย  Absolutely not.ย  UV is invisible to the human eye so ideally you should see nothing!ย  What you do see is visible ‘interference’ light (known as spill) and is a bi-product of poor quality inferior UV LEDs.ย  This bright, purple glare is not UV and only serves to illuminate the search area, actually making it harder to see the actual fluoresce you are looking for!

The UV rule of thumb is:ย  The brighter it is, the worse it is!

This is why our UV PRO range are made with a special UV PRO filter which removes all visible light and only lets the invisible UV light through.ย  This produces great, professional results.

The more LEDs the better?

Again. Absolutely not.ย  The greater the number of inferior (cheap) LEDs the torch has, the more visible interference light it produces and the worse the result.

Tip:ย  Avoid any UV Torch with more than 9 LEDS.

Does frequency matter?

Yes. The frequency of UV light emitted determines the quality of results obtained.ย  There is a sweet-spot for UV which is between 365nm and 385nm.ย  However, to manufacture LEDs capable of emitting in this frequency range is far more expensive.ย  The cheap UV torches sold on eBay and Amazon, will use inferior quality Chinese made LEDs emitting in the range of 390 – 410nm.ย  At this range the UV light is a very poor quality and the visible light output is at its highest (see here for more about UV Blacklight).

GLOWTEC UV PRO Forensic Torches are made using high quality KOREAN made 365-385nm UV LEDs which peak at 380nm with a much lower visible light output. This provides the best balance of quality, performance and price with excellent value for money.

See our short video to see why –> Comparison of UV Torches

What should I expect to see?

That really depends on what it is your are looking at / looking for!

Unlike man-made fluorescent materials such as white fabric, white paper and STARGLOW products which all fluoresce brightly under UV blacklight, natural fluorescent substances such as urine and body fluids, which whilst they do glow (fluoresce) under UV light, do not fluoresce brightly! In fact they are generally quite dim, so do not expect a supernova!

The colour shown under UV light is determined by the chemical composition of the substance, not the UV light itself.
