What are Glow-in-the-Dark paints?
Often referred to as phosphorescent, illuminous, luminous or luminescent paints, are essentially a clear paint suspension containing microscopic photo-luminescent crystals, which absorb invisible UV energy from existing light sources and then re-emit most of that energy as visible light.
This process happens in real-time so glow paints actually glow all the time, its just that in normal lighting conditions we cannot see this glow effect, but it does tend to give the paint a light greenish appearance. The energy the crystals do not re-emit immediately, is retained and slowly released as a gradually diminishing afterglow. Starglow paints can be recharged thousands of times and last many years.
Starglow Paints are made in the UK using the very latest in photo-luminescent technology, for a brighter, richer, longer-lasting glow. These high-performance, water-based paints are solvent-free, non-toxic and available in 6 great colours.
Glow paint should be applied over a suitable white (or white-primed) surface, so they should be ok to use on most surfaces.
The Professionals choice
Starglow Paints are designed to be durable, highly versatile and very long-lasting, as underpinned by our unique 10 year guarantee.
Our paints are used and trusted by many Organisations throughout the World, as well as in countless homes, businesses, schools and universities. Starglow paints are manufactured in the UK to comply with EU Safety Regulations and are safe, solvent-free, non-toxic and virtually odourless.
Not all glow paints are the same!
Each colour of glow paint has different performance characteristics from the next. For example, Starglow Green has the brightest, longest glowing and most vibrant glow colour, where as Starglow Red has the weakest glow colour with the shortest glow duration of them all! Somewhere in between these two, all the other glow colours have their place. In short, colour comes at the price of Performance.
So why are our paints so good?
Because we make ’em that way. We do not cut corners on quality nor do we use cheap ingredients, quite the opposite. When you compare Starglow paints with those made by other companies, you’ll see the difference. Starglow paints are premium-grade so they glow brighter, last longer and look better, but yes, they do cost a little more.
By only using the very best of ingredients available and opting for the optimum pigmentation, do we achieve the results we are happy with, and if we’re not happy why should you be?
We make Starglow paints to be waterproof, wash proof, tough and flexible; able to cope with most demanding interior and exterior applications.
So yes, we could produce cheap, poor quality paints, but why would we put our name to that?
Starglow paints are proudly manufactured right here the UK for quality, performance and reliability.
Glow Paint at a glance
Starglow luminous ‘glow’ paint is a water-borne polyurethane suspension containing a photo-luminescent pigment. For optimum glow performance these paints should be applied over a white (or white-primed) surface. Note: Do not apply over a black or dark coloured surface as this will reduce the luminosity and glow duration of the paint. Apply at least 2–3 coats.
Photo-luminescent paints absorb the invisible UV energy present in daylight and most artificial light sources and converts it in real-time to visible light i.e. its glow. This process is happening all the time unless it is in darkness, whereby the glow is derived from residual energy stored within the crystalline structure of the pigment.
The paint will glow brightly and burn-off most of the incoming (or stored) energy for the first few minutes, then it will settle into its afterglow phase – which delivers a dimmer but long-lasting glow that usually requires complete darkness to be seen and gradually diminishes over time. For this reason Glow / luminous paints are not suitable for outdoor use where daylight is the only source of energy for the paints to obtain their charge (see our FAQs page for more on this). If using glow-in-the-dark paint outdoors, ensure the area is totally dark at night and not lit by any form of lighting, including street-lighting.
Important note: Each colour of Starglow Luminous paint has very different performance characteristics in terms of its glow intensity and duration. Please see individual product pages for details on each paint colour.
Starglow paint can derive energy (charge) from many different sources of light however the richer in UV the quicker and stronger the charge. For this reason we recommend a UV Blacklight for quick-charging the paint as required. Luminous paint will continue to glow once the energise light source has been removed.
