Love ’em or hate ’em you have to respect them.  Rats and mice are all but invisible with their ‘Ninja’ like abilities, able to enter and leave without leaving a trace…. or do they?

This professional grade, UV based, Rodent Detector will help you identity rodent activity and runways on most surfaces and more importantly, locate their entry and exit points.

Rats, Mice, Hamsters, Squirrels even Guinea-Pigs leave invisible urine-trails, droppings and loose hairs which can be made visible with this detector.

So whether its a barn full of rats, mice in the kitchen or an escapee pet hamster, if you are concerned about rodents in your home or business, using this UV Forensic Torch is a safe and effective way to identify and track these pests and a helpful tool in controlling the problem.

FORENSIC UV for what the eye can’t see ™

One of the key reasons why the UV PRO Rodent Detector is the best rodent detector on the market, is the superior quality, Korean made UV LEDs we use, together with our unique UV PRO FILTER which removes 99% of visible interference light, so you only see the glow of the substance or  surface material to the invisible UV light emitted.  This killer combination produces consistent professional results at an affordable price.

Using the Detector

Rats and mice are incontinent and will urinate and defecate on the move (up to 80 times a day). This means you will probably see a trail of urine droplets or streaks leading in the direction of travel. Urine and droppings are deposited where the rodents spend most of their time and where they travel.

Amino acids in rodent urine will fluoresce, or emit light of a different color, when exposed to ultraviolet light. This makes it possible to see rodent, rat, mouse, hamster, guinea-pig or squirrel urine even in dark places.

There are many factors which determine how bright a urine stain will be (or not be). In short; old stains are generally dimmer / paler with age. Different types of vermin urine stains can glow in differing colour tones and in varying degrees of intensity.

Note:  The colour shown under UV light is determined by the chemical composition of the substance, not the uv light itself.  The main determining factors for this are the animals diet and health, therefore the colours mentioned below may vary accordingly.

Rat Urine:  Contains a chemical called urobilin, which fluoresces under UV light may appear as a bluey-white to yellow-green colour.

Mouse Urine:  Contains a chemical called 3-aminomethyl-5-methyl-hexanoic acid (AMMH), which fluoresces under UV light and may appear as a bluey-white to yellow-green colour.

Guinea Pig Urine:  Contains porphyrins, which can fluoresce under UV light and may appear as a bluey-white to yellow-green color or sometimes as a pinky-red colour.

Hamster Urine:  Contains high levels of proteins that can fluoresce under UV light and may appear as a bluey-white to yellow-green colour.

Gerbil Urine:  Contains high levels of proteins that can fluoresce under UV light and may appear as a bluey-white to yellow-green colour.

Squirrel Urine:  Contains high levels of riboflavin, which can fluoresce under UV light and may appear as a bluey-white to yellow-green colour.

Rodent Hair:   Fluoresces blue-white.

Rodent Feces:   Some rodent feces can glow under UV light, because rodent feces will often contain high levels of phosphorus. The fluorescence appears as a blue-white glow under UV light.  However, it’s important to note that not all rodent feces will necessarily glow under UV light. The ability to fluoresce depends on the specific composition of the feces, as well as the intensity and wavelength of the UV light used.

Note:  There are many natural and artificial chemical substances and materials found in the home which will also fluoresce under UV light!

Pro Tip:   Always ensure batteries are fresh and have plenty of charge in them. Weak batteries = Weak results.

Pro Tip:  To test the strength of the invisible UV beam, shine it onto a piece of plain white paper or white fabric

Pro Tip:  When searching for stains, be sure to darken the search area as much as possible first.  Stains will NOT show up well in bright light / daylight, so its best to search for stains at night if possible.

Pro Tip:  When you find a stain trail, mark its location with chalk, tape or a pencil.  This way you’ll find the spot when the lights are back on.

Pro Tip:  Be sure to check on and around  feed sacks and stock boxes where rodent runways may have been established.

Pro Tip:  If you do find urine stains, it is important to clean them up as soon as possible. Urine can contain harmful bacteria that can make you or your animals sick. To clean up urine stains, you can use a commercial enzymatic cleaner. Be sure to follow the directions on the cleaner label.

Do not allow children to use this product unsupervised.

Remember. Safety first!  Do not shine torch beam directly into the eyes or at faces.

About UV Light

There is much mis-information online about UV light (Blacklight) we’ll clear up a few main points here…

Is brighter really better?

No.  Absolutely not.  UV is invisible to the human eye so ideally you should see nothing!  What you do see is visible ‘interference’ light (known as spill) and is a bi-product of poor quality inferior UV LEDs.  This bright, purple glare is not UV and only serves to illuminate the search area, actually making it harder to see the actual fluoresce you are looking for!

The UV rule of thumb is:  The brighter it is, the worse it is!

This is why our UV PRO range are made with a special UV PRO filter which removes all visible light and only lets the invisible UV light through.  This produces great, professional results.

The more LEDs the better?

Again. Absolutely not.  The greater the number of inferior (cheap) LEDs the torch has, the more visible interference light it produces and the worse the result.

Tip: Avoid any UV Torch with more than 9 LEDS.

Does frequency matter?

Yes. The frequency of UV light emitted determines the quality of results obtained.  There is a sweet-spot for UV which is between 365nm and 385nm.  However, to manufacture LEDs capable of emitting in this frequency range is far more expensive.  The cheap UV torches sold on eBay and Amazon, will use inferior quality Chinese made LEDs emitting in the range of 390 – 410nm.  At this range the UV light is a very poor quality and the visible light output is at its highest (see here for more about UV Blacklight).

GLOWTEC UV PRO Forensic Torches are made using high quality KOREAN made 365-385nm UV LEDs which peak at 380nm with a much lower visible light output. This provides the best balance of quality, performance and price with excellent value for money.

See our short video to see why –> Comparison of UV Torches

What should I expect to see?

That really depends on what it is your are looking at / looking for!

Unlike man-made fluorescent materials such as white fabric, white paper and UV paint which all fluoresce brightly under UV blacklight, natural fluorescent substances such as urine and body fluids, which whilst they do glow (fluoresce) under UV light, do not fluoresce brightly! In fact they are generally quite dim, so do not expect a supernova!

The colour shown under UV light is determined by the chemical composition of the substance, not the UV light itself.
